Diving safari in the Red Sea on the MY Blue Storm

During my fourth Red Sea diving safari aboard the “MY Blue Storm” I completed 17 dives in 6 days. The trip rekindled my passion for diving, leaving me eager for more adventures.

My 4th diving safari in the Red Sea, following trips in 2006 (Southern Route, MY Firebird), 2009 (Brothers/Daedalus, MY Thunderbird), and 2012 (Wreck/North, MY Seawolf Dominator), once again took me to Egypt’s southern route (St. Johns/Elphinstone), this time aboard the “MY Blue Storm” – a ship from the Blue Planet fleet. Apart from the strike at Stuttgart Airport, which required one of my friends to rebook with a departure from Munich, the journey there and back for my two friends and me went smoothly. Special thanks to Charly Reisen (tauch-safari.de) for their short notice about the strike. The diving safari started and ended in the port of Port Ghalib, and despite the boat being almost fully booked, there was a pleasant atmosphere among the divers.

Of the planned 20 dives, we were able to complete 17. Unfortunately, two dives had to be cancelled due to a storm, and one night dive was cancelled due to the sighting of a Longimanus, an oceanic whitetip shark. The crew of the Blue Storm provided the best service I have ever experienced. I particularly appreciated the help with getting into my suit and the careful hanging and turning of it. The warm outdoor shower was also top-notch. The Captain’s Dinner on the top deck was a special experience that was made unforgettable by the dedicated crew.

During the stay on the boat, I learned about the tragic accident of another diving safari a few weeks earlier, the MY Sea Legend from Dive Pro Liveaboards, which had sunk after a fire. An interview with survivors of this accident can be viewed here. The story made me particularly aware of the safety precautions on board the Blue Storm. Each cabin was equipped with smoke detectors, and care was taken to ensure that electrical devices were not charged in the cabins overnight. As additional safety measures, there was an axe and a small fire extinguisher in the cabins, especially in the hull. In retrospect, I am still glad that the tour went without any major incidents.

The tour will remain a beautiful memory and has reignited my desire for more, after having dived very little in the last 5-10 years.
