Ahornboden in fall - a paradise for nature lovers
The Great Maple Plain (Großer Ahornboden) in the Risstal valley, located at approximately 1,200 meters in the northern Karwendel Mountains, offers a spectacular natural display in autumn. The centuries-old maple trees, some up to 600 years old, glow in vibrant shades of yellow and red, set against the backdrop of towering mountain peaks.
Although the valley is in Austria, it can only be accessed from Germany. At the end of the valley lies the picturesque alpine village of Eng, a starting point for numerous hikes – an ideal destination for families and nature lovers alike.
This October, we chose a family-friendly circular 6km route from Eng to the Binsalm and back to the valley via the Panorama Trail. Higher up, there was already snow, and the melting snow made for a muddy but manageable descent. The hike was varied, not too challenging, and offered stunning views as well as opportunities to stop for refreshments. Additionally, the alpine village features a lovely playground, making it a hit for both kids and adults.
It’s worth noting that the final 12 kilometers of the Risstal, leading to the Great Maple Plain and the alpine village, are subject to a toll fee. This year, the fee was €7 for cars.
